Emotional Imbalance - Feeling over emotional? Or no emotions at all?

Balancing your emotions through EMDR therapy

Emotional imbalance is the result of either emotions taking over your life or refusing to process or even feel emotions. Several common mental health illnesses are the direct result of emotional imbalance. PTSD is the result of one’s inability to process the emotions surrounding a trauma. Depression and anxiety result from being overwhelmed by emotions.

Symptoms of emotional imbalance include both mental and physical signs. People suffering from emotional distress may withdraw from people, display unexpected personality changes, feel physically tense or experience extreme hopelessness. They may fail to take care of themselves or those around them, even engaging in risky behavior. Whatever the symptoms, there is help available.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy which helps people process emotions in a health way. At the most basic level, EMDR can help desensitize you to the triggers that bother you and guide you through reprocessing the lingering emotions.

Each EMDR session follows a few basic steps:

  • A trained therapist will ask about your mental health history.

  • Techniques for handling physical and emotional stress are discussed.

  • Discuss events related to your stress, and any body sensations ( rapid heartbeat, chest tightness, shaking, stomach issues) that you maybe feeling in response to your anxiety and depression. You will also discuss any negative beliefs you have about yourself. Your therapist will then use eye movements, taps, or tones to reprogram these negative thoughts and allow you to relax and think more positively about yourself

  • Your therapist will check in to ensure you feel okay about the day’s session. They also assign “homework,” such as keeping symptom logs.

If your emotional imbalance is the result of being overwhelmed by emotions resulting in them taking control of your life, the EMDR treatment process can help you feel less sensitive to the provocations that bother you and supplant the lingering emotions.
